The Western Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry star is a respected musician, arranger, award-winning Western music songwriter and historian, best known for his work with the Grammy Award winning group, Riders in the Sky for which he plays guitar, yodels and sings lead and baritone vocals, billed as "Ranger Doug — The Idol of American Youth" and "Governor of the Great State of Rhythm".
With Riders in the Sky for over 45 years, Ranger Doug has been a Grand Ole Opry member for 41 of those years. The group won two GRAMMY awards for tie-in albums with Disney and Pixar’s popular films Toy Story 2 and Monsters, Inc. The Riders in the Sky have also been awarded by the Western Music Association, received numerous Wrangler awards from the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum; awards from the Academy of Western Artists, enshrinement in the Walkway of Western Stars, and more.
He is also a member of the highly-acclaimed, western swing super group, The Time Jumpers.
Doug Green’s passion for music goes beyond the stage to the roots. He is a distinguished music historian whose 2002 Vanderbilt University Press book "Singing in the Saddle" was the first comprehensive look at the singing cowboy phenomenon that swept the country in the 1930s.
And Green shares some of those historical notes and music as host of "Ranger Doug's Classic Cowboy Corral" on Sirius XM’s Willie’s Roadhouse, delving into his personal vintage cowboy music collection. The show features the music of such classic western performers as Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Tex Ritter, Rex Allen, and the Sons of the Pioneers, as well as more obscure recordings.
Prior to forming Riders in the Sky, Green performed with The Boys from Shiloh, The Shinbone Alley All Stars, and The Doug Green Band. In 1967 and 1969 he worked two stints with Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys and one with Jimmy Martin in 1969. He recorded two albums in 1972 with Vic Jordan and the Buck White Family, one of gospel songs (In God's Eyes) and one traditional bluegrass named after his daughters Liza Jane and Sally Anne. Green has also recorded the solo album Songs of the Sage.
