South for Winter

In the summer of 2014, New Zealander Nick Stone and Coloradan Dani Cichon met as volunteers building greenhouses in South America. There, on a Peruvian rooftop, the two musicians wrote their first of many songs together: a song that would one day become South for Winter’s first single, “Fallen Seeds.”

After years spent pursuing different musical projects on opposite sides of the world, Stone and Cichon rejoined in Christchurch, New Zealand. The two soon moved to Nashville TN, where they continued to round out the eclectic blend of instrumentation and haunting stories that has since become a defining quality of their music. In 2018, they hit the road: playing hundreds of shows across the United States, New Zealand, Germany, Denmark, England, Poland, Canada, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, and turning heads as they went.

Often described as “folk-blues," "roots," or “Ameri-kinda,” South for Winter's songs are intoned with a depth of emotion and richness of experience that invites listeners into the story. In a landscape saturated with incredible songwriters and musicians, South for Winter have developed a sound all of their own. With meticulously crafted lyrics, captivating natural charisma, and an impressive assortment of instruments at their command, South for Winter have time and time again established themselves as a crowd favorite.

The duo has landed accolades such as a Semi-Finalist in the 2025 Shoals City Showdown; Finalist for “Best Group/Duo” in the 2023 International Acoustic Music Awards; Semi-Finalist in the 2023 and 2022 International Songwriting Competition; Official Showcase Artist at Folk Alliance International in 2024 and 2022; Official Artist at South by Southwest Music Festival in 2023; Top DJ Pick by John Platt of NYC’s WFUV in 2021; and “Most Wanted” Emerging Artist at Falcon Ridge Festival in 2019. Their music has been praised by sites such as American Songwriter ("laden with delicate harmonies, intricate guitar-work, and earthy vocals... impeccable sound"), NoDepression ("must-see artist"), For the Love of Bands ("a wonderful mix of indie and folk rock"), Grateful Web ("eclectic in the best sense of the word"), AmericanaUK ("An ethereal, dreamy, journey...a journey well-worth taking"), Relix Magazine, and DittyTV. Between releases, the act has continued to tour relentlessly both nationally and internationally, bringing audiences to their feet and selling out shows around the world.

South for Winter recorded both their debut album, Luxumbra, and sophomore concept album, Of Sea and Sky, in Nashville TN alongside multi GRAMMY award-winning producer Matt Leigh. The new album has received an outpouring of support from listeners far and wide, raising over $21,000 (over 141% of its funding goal) in crowdfunding donations for its independent release, gaining the band over 50,000 online followers in the year after its release, earning shoutouts from sites like No Depression Magazine and Americana Highways, landing on three Spotify editorial playlists with album singles, and having worldwide airplay from stations such as Lightning 100 (Nashville TN), Radio New Zealand (New Zealand), WFUV Radio (NYC), Asheville FM (Asheville NC), and WFMT (Chicago IL).
